SALT LAKE CITY — Police say two men have been arrested in connection with a shooting in Salt Lake City’s Ballpark neighborhood that injured a 20-year-old man.

Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department responded to the area of 1500 S. Major Street around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

When police arrived, they located a man hiding behind a car with gunshot wounds and began first aid. Paramedics transported the man to the hospital in critical condition, where he underwent surgery.

Police said that as of Monday, the victim was no longer in the hospital.

During the investigation, detectives learned the victim was shot near a music venue where there was a large party occurring.

After chasing down multiple leads and obtaining court-authorized search warrants, police say 47-year-old Ryan Lua and 25-year-old Christopher Taliu were arrested in West Jordan on Monday. During the search, detectives said they located multiple firearms and ammunition.

Lua and Taliu were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and felony discharge of a firearm.

Police said that based on the preliminary investigation, both men were working as bouncers for the music venue and surveillance video showed the victim and another person associated with the music venue getting into a fight near the venue’s entrance.

The video then showed both Lua and Taliu shooting multiple rounds in the direction of the victim and his car, which had people inside, police said.

“Further, Taliu is accused of charging the victim’s car and continuing to shoot multiple rounds at close range at the people inside,” SLC police said. “The victim is seen on video shooting back toward Lua and others.”
