According to a rumour, Mario Kart 9 is currently in development. Furthermore, it will offer a twist to the series.

Mario Kart 8 was first released for the Nintendo Wii U in 2014. It was then released as a Deluxe version in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch which was bundled with all previously released DLC. Mario Kart Tour was also released for mobile in 2019.

However, it’s now been nearly five years since MK8 Deluxe graced the Nintendo Switch and fans have been wondering when the next game in the beloved series will arrive. Thankfully, the next instalment may be about to speed around the next corner.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Kantan Games’ Dr Serkan gave gaming predictions for 2022 and among those predictions was Mario Kart 9. Serkan claimed: “I am aware Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling very well on the Nintendo Switch, but Mario Kart 9 is in active development (and comes with a new twist) and Nintendo could tease it this year.”

We’d love to see a new Mario Kart!

If these claims are true, could we see the new kart racer announced at E3 this June? If not, it could be a surprise announcement at one of the Nintendo Direct events this year. Only time will tell.

It will also be interesting to see what this new “twist” could be. Nintendo likes to do things outside of the box, so it could be anyone’s guess. For me personally, I would love to see a story campaign in MK9 much like Mario Tennis Aces and Mario Golf: Super Rush.

In related Mario Kart news, recently Mario Kart 8 Deluxe became the highest selling game in the series, shifting nearly 40 million copies. Mamma Mia!

What do you think this new “Twist” might be and do believe a new entry for Nintendo’s iconic racer will be announced this year? Let’s speculate across our social media channels.
