Marjoe Gortner was the youngest child evangelist, who later exposed it for the racket that it can be. This documentary won an Oscar in 1973.
Many of us know him solely from his role as the psychotic armed forces grunt who was interested in Victoria Principle's character from the movie Earthquake.
Anyone else know of this? I though I had heard it all...

I think I saw him in a really bad remake of H G Well's "Food of the Gods." It was lame but then I like B-movies. I think this one might have been a D-movie.

I remember seeing a photo feature in "Hustler" featuring him and nude female models reenacting the Crucifixion.

I actually saw Marjoe when it first came out - I think at the Playboy Theater in Chicago. I had quite a crush on him for awhile but that ended when I saw Earthquake.

What do you want to know? %0D %0D He was a child evangelist, he got religion, in a manner of speaking, and turned against the Christer racket. Made the documentary. Made some not very good movies.%0D %0D

My sibs and I remember him for his brilliant performance as a junkie in THE MARCUS-NELSON MURDERS (TV movie that spawned Kojack).%0D %0D To this day, we'll randomly say, "I'm SICK, man!" What an awesome line reading.

I saw the documentary years ago (I rented it). It was a great film and deserved the Oscar.%0D %0D Marjoe was terribly used and mistreated as a child, but the movie depicts him as being a charismatic, likeable, self-aware, well-adjusted, down to earth character. His girlfriend in the movie is a very plain African American woman. He seemed rather unscathed from his horrible childhood.%0D %0D But after the movie made him famous he turned into a typical Hollywood dick, hanging out at the Playboy mansion, dating Playboy bunnies and "models" and generally behaving like an asshole. Although exciting to watch as a preacher, as an singer and actor he was a dismal failure. He was never taken seriously as anything more than an oddity.

Is he still alive?
What is he doing these days?
Can anyone link to the Hustler photos?

Anyone remember him in Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw with Lynda Carter? Super cheesy with plenty of Lynda Carter's naked boobs. I think it's on Hulu.
I also remember Food of the Gods, but I don't recall the nudity, just the giant rubber mosquitoes.

MarJoe is 71 today, January 14, 2015.
Super creepy kid, creepier adult. Perfectly cast in EARTHQUAKE.

The best part about "Food of the Gods" was that the old couple had jars of Food of the Gods marked "FOTG."

Crazy that this is mentioned. I just saw Earthquake on the big screen in downtown LA on Saturday. The actress who played Loren Greene's secretary was there, answering questions about the film and Ava Gardner.
Marjoe was very creepy and SHRILL.

I think he dated Susan Sullivan for a while, no?

I know he was married to Candy Clark for a while.
Clark was considered a hot property with a great future in film for about 5 minutes in the mid-70s.
