Will Liverpool be awarded the Premier League title? Many fans have been asking after Manchester City were charged.

Liverpool supporters have been embroiled in a discussion after it emerged on Monday that the Citizens had allegedly broken Financial Fair Play regulations, following a four-year investigation from the Premier League.

As a result, some Liverpool fans have wondered if the Reds will retrospectively be awarded the Premier League titles for the seasons they narrowly lost out to Manchester City.

So, will Liverpool be awarded the Premier League title? Let’s take a look at what past incidents of a similar nature suggest will happen…

Will Liverpool be awarded the Premier League title?

Well, it seems as if Liverpool would be awarded the Premier League title for recent years in which they’ve finished second to Manchester City, based on what happened in Italy back in the 2005/06 campaign.

In a scandal famously known as Calciopoli, Juventus were stripped of their 2005/06 Serie A title after it was discovered they were involved in match fixing, as five Italians teams were penalised for attempting to influence results by handpicking specific referees.

That year, AC Milan finished second, although they were also involved in the scandal, so the 2005/06 Serie A title was awarded to Inter Milan, who finished third.

As detailed by the BBC, Juventus lodged an appeal in 2019 to get the title back, although to this day, it has gone down as a win for Inter Milan, despite the fact they finished 15 points behind the Old Lady.

While Manchester City have not necessarily been charged with match fixing, they have been slapped with over 100 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, which is simply another form of cheating.

Therefore, we would expect the Citizens to be treated in similar fashion to Juventus – if not a more severe punishment – with Liverpool awarded the 2013/14 and 2018/19 Premier League titles after finishing second in those campaigns.

It is also possible that Manchester City won the 2021/22 Premier League title through illegal measures, although that will require a fresh investigation from the Premier League.

Make sure to keep an eye on the situation, as Liverpool’s trophy cabinet could soon grow if Manchester City are found guilty.
