Alex Crook says Tottenham Hotspur transfer target James Ward-Prowse feels ‘let down’ by Southampton ahead of a potential exit.

Southampton finished rock-bottom and were relegated to the Championship during the 2022/23 Premier League season and transfer expert Crook says James Ward-Prowse ‘will get a Premier League club’ this summer.

He added that the likes of West Ham United, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are keen on him, and he would ‘improve’ Spurs, as he told talkSPORT.

At the age of 28, there is no time for Ward-Prowse to mess about, he can’t be playing Championship football at his age, especially with Euro 2024 around the corner for the England hopeful.

It’s just a case of how much the Saints want for their club captain, who has a contract at the club until 2026.

It has been suggested that one of the reasons why a deal for the dead-ball specialist might drag on is because of the ‘asking price’.

“James Ward-Prowse wants to get back in the Premier League,” said Crook. “I think West Ham have got an interest in him and a number of other Premier League clubs.

“Newcastle also have him on their list. As I understand, they don’t have him at the top of their list. I think Southampton are asking for quite a substantial fee. Tottenham have been mentioned as well. You can see him improving their midfield.

“I think James Ward-Prowse will get a Premier League club. But because of the asking price, then I can see this one dragging into the final few weeks of the window.

On Ward-Prowse possibly staying: “I think he feels a little let down by what has happened at Southampton and the way the new owners have run the football club. He signed a new contract and he handcuffed himself really because of the wages. And I think he feels that they failed him with what’s gone on this season.”

Would Ward-Prowse improve Tottenham?

In terms of creative talent, the £40 million star isn’t a James Maddison, another player that was relegated this season and another player Spurs are looking at.

That’s what Ange Postecoglou needs the most, but it doesn’t mean that he should shy away from any deal for Ward-Prowse.

He is better than most midfielders currently at Spurs, with the injured Rodrigo Bentancur top of that pile, and it’s something they should look towards, only if they can get him for a logical transfer fee.
