About the Song

“It is Well with My Soul” was written after facing a traumatic experience that happened in Spafford’s life. First, was the death of his 2-year-old son, and the second was a tragic event that happened during the Great Chicago Fire. The Great Chicago Fire has ruined him financially. Due to its business problems, he sent his family to Europe. But while the family was crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship sank, and his daughters died. Luckily, his wife survived that incident.

Spafford was inspired to write this song after passing through the ship where his daughters died.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Those words put in the song shows how we need the Lord in our life. This song speaks the goodness of the Lord, that beyond those sins we had committed, the Lord still accepts us to be one of His children.

Praying and following Him is one of the best gifts we can give to the Lord.
