With temperatures on the downswing in the Treasure Valley and much of Idaho, Idaho City has received its first significant snowfall over the weekend, prompting excitement and some nervousness.

The community of around 500 people found 2-3 inches of snow on its doorstep. The climb up Route 21 showed some snowcapped mountains near Lucky Peak and Robie Creek, but upon driving within 10 miles of Idaho City, snow started to become much more prevalent.

One of the employees at Simply Fun, a nostalgic toy store in Idaho City, had mixed emotions on the snowfall.

"Everybody's excited for the fall colors," Lindsay Smith-Mackin said.

Her concerns focused around keeping her home warm and clearing her roof.

"Everybody's a little worried around here, especially if you're in a tiny house or an RV," Smith-Mackin said. "It's a little intense in the winter, so to have it come so quick scared a few new timers like me, but I think it's going to be fine."

Smith-Mackin was not new to Idaho City, but it is her first time in her own place, so she's managing all the challenges that come with that.

Owner of Harley's Pub, Kimberly Barnhill, said that there's a couple of challenges in maintaining a building in the winter season.

"Any business and any place with residents, we always try to get the snow off, otherwise it gets too heavy which could cause some damage, so we just have to keep an eye on it," Barnhill said.

She jokingly added something she keeps an eye on during first snowfall.

"To see how many people end up into the ditch by first snowfall." Barnhill said.

Most locals were overall excited by the snowfall and ready to embrace the challenges it brought.
