FRUITA, Utah – The National Weather Service on Thursday confirmed flash flooding at Capitol Reef just east of Fruita and issued flash flood warnings for multiple areas in the state.

Warnings have been issued Emery County near the scar of a recent wildfire, as well as areas around Zion National Park.

“In hilly terrain, there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain,” according to the NWS. “Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.”

Authorities caution those in flash flood warning areas to stay alert, even if locations aren’t receiving rain. Dry washes, streams and rivers can become “raging killer currents” in a matter of minutes from distant rainfall, according to the NWS.

The National Weather Services specifically lists Caineville, Hurricane, La Verkin, Toquerville, Emery County, Teasdale, Torrey, and Grover.

The flash flood warnings are in place through at least 4:45 p.m. Thursday.
