It was significantly cheaper than booking directly, so I went for it. However, a while ago at a hotel check-in the person ahead of me was refused a room, with the clerk saying, "I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do, it's between you and Expedia."
Have your Expedia bookings gone awry?

I was checking into a mid-tier Westin, and I was behind another guest. I heard the front desk check-in clerk say loudly something like he found her reservation and that she received an excellent rate through Expedia -- but he said it in an obnoxious, condescending gay voice. I was horrified he treated her so rudely, at such a mediocre hotel.

I would steer clear of any hotel "discount" booking sites. Hotels hate them and go out of their way to point out the best rates available are on their websites. If you're not a member of any hotel loyalty program, join them. It usually knocks $10-15 off the nightly rate.

I’ve had good luck with Priceline but I do like Hyatt’s loyalty program. The points stack up fast.

This is a non-chain hotel. I don't care if I get attitude, I just don't want to be turned away.

Are you black?

I used to like the hotels.com (which is Expedia) program. Staying ten nights anywhere, get one free.
Well, of course they dumped that last year. No matter, like R3, I'm a Hyatt loyalist. Their top benefits are truly excellent.

Booking through hotel sites will always get you a less desirable room. Might be the type of room you booked, but it will be the loudest, smelliest, worse view, least updated. They are trained to do that. Save the nicer rooms for their preferred hotel members.

Expedia bookers are losers

This is a 100% true. Any kind of issue, you will have to go through Expedia, and their customer service is terrible. Also with Expedia, you frequently ( though not always) have to pay upfront.
For a flight, no fucking way. I’d still be hesitant about a hotel, but the cost difference would have to be big.
Expedia stays also do not usually earn points on the airline/hotel programm.

I've never had a problem. The only minor issue I had was some dimwit wouldn't attach my Hilton Honors rewards # to the reservation since it wasn't booked directly with them. The person at front desk the next morning had no problem doing it, however.

I had a less than stellar experience with Hotels.com for a reservation that was to take place early April of 2020. They refused to refund until ultimately they did. I learned to go directly through the property in the future.

If you book through a third party make sure you can cancel and then call the hotel immediately to make sure everything is ok. You are usually better off booking directly.
