According to regional media, Casey suffered fatal injuries in a motorbike accident on Tuesday, 6 June. Fans of other BMX athletes have paid tribute to Casey on his Instagram images and videos in the days since his passing. But who was Pat Casey, what happened to him, and who is his family?

Who was Pat Casey?

Pat Casey was a motorsports competitor and rider of BMX bikes. According to local media sources, he was the first rider to successfully complete challenging bicycle motocross tricks nicknamed the “decade backflip” and “double decade backflip” in competition. He was referred to as a “transition rider extraordinaire” by the sportswear and footwear company Vans.

When he was a small child, his father constructed him a six-foot-tall ramp that he could use when he was twelve, which sparked his interest in riding. He started building a reputation in the business at the age of 14, and at the age of 16, he received official recognition as a professional rider.

At the age of 18, he relocated from Yorba Linda, California, where he had grown up, to Riverside, California. In his own backyard, he constructed the ramp and trails that became known as Dreamyard, which later served as a BMX practice area. Casey competed in competitions all around the world and received numerous honours for his accomplishments, including a gold medal in the X Games, an annual action sports competition held in the US.

What happened to Pat Casey?

On Tuesday, June 6, Casey was engaged in a motorbike accident and was declared deceased at the spot. At the private California motocross track Slayground Motocross Park, Casey attempted a jump but failed, which led to the incident.

California Highway Patrol Officer Jared Grieshaber claimed on Tuesday that the motorbike appeared to fall on top of him when he failed to land properly. Casey received CPR from witnesses who saw the collision, which happened around 3 p.m. local time until emergency personnel arrived less than 15 minutes later. The medical professionals continued CPR on Casey until around 3:40 p.m., but he was regrettably declared dead.

The private facility is commonly used for motocross training and a few X Games tournaments. The event and related fatality are being investigated by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department since it took place on private property. The investigation is still ongoing, according to a press release from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
