Blaine County schools were locked out Tuesday morning after school officials heard a loud noise in the bathroom.

At a little past 10 a.m., a Wood River Middle School teacher heard a loud noise from the bathroom. "Out of an abundance of caution, all schools in the district secured their sites," the school district said.

Wood River Middle School went into lockdown, and the school district put out a warning saying, "All other schools are locked out, do not go to schools."

At 11:32, the school district sent out a message explaining that law enforcement investigated and determined the noise was a balloon popping.Polling places located at schools close to the incident were also briefly placed on temporary lockdown as the situation developed, the Idaho Secretary of State's Office says.

"A special thanks to law enforcement for their rapid response," the district said. "Afternoon classes will continue as planned except for afternoon preschool."
