Aston Villa have landed a double injury boost with Alex Moreno returning to training and Jacob Ramsey nearing a return for boss Unai Emery after the international break.

That is according to the Express & Star, which reports that Moreno is now back at Bodymoor Heath with Aston Villa’s players not representing their nations. Emery has been without the left-back since he sustained a hamstring injury in May. But he could return to the pitch soon.

Moreno is now in contention for minutes when Aston Villa resume the Premier League term against Crystal Palace. The Eagles travel to Villa Park on September 16 eying a first away win over the Villans since December 2013. Crystal Palace have lost in four of their past six visits.

Alex Moreno could return from injury when Aston Villa host Crystal Palace

Lucas Digne has enjoyed a mostly positive start to the campaign after regaining Aston Villa’s left-back role following Moreno’s injury. The 30-year-old had fallen out of favour with Emery to the Spaniard following the latter’s arrival in Birmingham. He joined for £13.5m in January.

Aston Villa backed Emery to sign Moreno from Real Betis as the head coach felt the 30-year-old was an upgrade on Digne. Emery then proceeded to start Moreno in 14 of a potential 19 Premier League games. He suffered his hamstring issue in the penultimate game of 2021/22.

Moreno often impressed, too, with Alan Shearer and Ian Wright lauding his ‘brilliant’ crosses into Ollie Watkins against West Ham. The full-back delivered precise balls into the box to get three assists in 19 outings. Digne had one goal in 28 fixtures without a single assist last term.

Jacob Ramsey hands Unai Emery a double boost in the international break

Ramsey has also handed Emery a second boost as the midfielder is also close to returning to action with Aston Villa following his injury. The 22-year-old is also yet to feature this season after suffering a foot injury with England’s Under-21s at the 2023 European Championships.

Aston Villa hope to welcome Ramsey back to full fitness within the next few weeks. He was an instrumental figure in their squads last season with 35 Premier League appearances. The Birmingham-born star also offered six goals plus seven assists and started 31 of his games.
