Friday was "hometown heroes night" at the Stampede Rodeo in Nampa.

Among those heroes is Debbie Shearn, a dispatch supervisor with the Canyon County Sheriff's Office. She's been with CCSO for 18 years.

Debbie says, "For me, it's the sense that you're helping. You're here when somebody needs help."

She has a talent for helping and multi-tasking. "You're talking to the field units and you're typing and all the while the person on the phone may not stop talking. So you've got to be able to do a lot of things at one time," she explained.

Debbie is also a cowgirl.

She competed at high school rodeos in barrels and roping. "I loved to rope. Very fun. Very Addictive!" She even did a little English riding in 4-H.

Now she rides for the fun of it and to teach her two daughters. She said, "With the horses I have, the kids are always busy. It keeps 'em busy - keeps all of us busy!" It also teaches responsibility. "I've seen that bond that develops between a horse and rider."

With her love of horses, it seems only natural that Debbie also runs the queen program for the Owyhee Fair and Rodeo. In fact, she's been doing that for 23 years now, longer than she's been with the sheriff's office.

Debbie herself was the Owyhee Rodeo Queen in 1988.

Whether she's riding horses, volunteering at the rodeo or working on a call at the dispatch center, Debbie Shearn goes above and beyond by developing bonds that last.
